My goal is to  make the online commissioning process as easy as possible..  The process is qute simple and I will be here to guide you  and answer any questions you might have.  Below are some steps that  will provide a good idea of what to expect throughout the online commissioning process.  

Step 1:  Book your appointment (see below to book online), you will receive a confirmation email once booked;

Step 2: Email the document(s) you need commissioned along with your photo ID  to jeff@aikmanlegal.ca (you can also reply to your confirmation email);

Step 3: At your scheduled appointment time, simply click the link contained within your confirmation email and you will be directed to a Zoom video conference; 

Step 4:  During our appointment, I will :

• Confirm your identity by asking you to hold your physical ID card next to your face;
• Address any questions or concerns you might have;
• Email you a link to view and sign your document;
• Administer an oath, affirmation or declaration;
• Commission your document by adding my signature and adding some other necessary information;  
• Since I am a Notary Public, I am also add a digital Notary seal, indicating that your document was commissioned by an Ontario Notary Public; 
• Ensure you receive your remotely commissioned document(s) prior to ending the call; and
• Taking your payment by credit card, e-transfer, or if pre-arranged invoicing for payment at a later date or by a third party. 

Commissioning a document is where someone who has been designated as a Commissioner for taking Affidavits  verifies your identity and administers an oath, affirmation or declaration,  usually before you sign a document.  Since every Notary Public is also a Commissioner for Taking Affidavits, I always include my  Notarial seal (digital or embossed) when commissioning a document as proof of my authority to commission documents and administer oaths, affirmations and declarations.   Including a Notary seal also helps to ensure acceptance of international documents being submitted  outside of Canada.

• Sworn Statement for a Family Gift of a Used Veicle;
• RIN Letter;
• Invitation Letter;
• Many OSAP documents; 
• Common Law Affidavit;
• Any affidavit or statutory declaration in Ontario (and some other provinces); and

Absolutely! In my booking form, feel free to click the “add guests” button to add additional parties to the meeting.  Everyone added, will receive a link to join the Video Conference at our appointment time. 

The role of a Commissioner for Taking Affidavits (sometimes called Commissioner of Oaths or just a Commissioner) is to administer legal oaths, affirmations and declarations.  In most cases, this is done through two distinct types of document’s, respectively: an Affidavit and a Statutory Declaration.  In Ontario, certain officials are automatically a Commissioner for Taking Affidavits by virtue of their profession and do not require an appointment.  These officials include Licensed Paralegals, Lawyers as well as certain government & municipal officials.  

While every Notary Public in Ontario  is also a Commissioner for Taking Affidavits, not every Commissioner for Taking Affidavits is a Notary Public.  In Ontario, Notaries are almost exclusively either Paralegals or Lawyers with few exceptions.  Some of the additional powers that a Notary Public holds is the ability to witness and attest/certify the execution of a document and certify/attest a true copy of a document.
